Growing in to Grown Up

Judging Books By Their Cover | July 31, 2009

I LOVE the library! Love, Love, LOVE it! It’s in the heart of downtown, a spectacular old building, and filled with thousands of books just begging to be read.  I’ve always loved libraries…they’re like Barnes & Noble but FREE! I visited the Nashville library for the first time probably about 4 days after moving here so I could become a member and not miss out on a second of my treasured reading time.

I’ve told a bunch of you before, but my favorite thing about the Nashville library is the self checkout.  In the past, I’ve always belonged to libraries where white-haired women and cranky old men check out the books by hand. I became so tired of the eye rolls, snippy comments, and heavy sighs I received after checking out my chick lit that I started also checking out books I had zero intention of reading just so it looked like my chick lit was just a mental break from the tough stuff. Preparing for the MCATs? Yes. Books on theology or physics? Sure. You get the idea.

I wandered over to the library’s website for the first time on May 26th. I know this because I went to request a hold for the book “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell”.  I noticed that you could sign up for something that would keep a list of the books you’ve checked out so I signed up.  I got an email notification that I had a new message in my online library account so I logged back in last night. My book is now available! But I also peeked at what books I’ve checked out since May 26th.  And y’all? This is sad.

My Summer of Southern Discomfort – Stephanie Gayle
Full of It – Wendy French
Practically Perfect – Katie Forde
Cause Celeb – Helen Fielding
Mine are Spectacular – Janie Kaplan & Lynn Schnurnberger
Passing Strange – Sally MacLeod
Hunger Point – Jillian Medoff
Lipstick Jungle – Candace Bushnell
Bitter is the New Black– Jenn Lancaster
Confessions of a Contractor – Richard Murphy
Friday Nights – Joanna Trollope
Remember Me? – Sophie Kinsella
Second Chance – Jane Green
The Other Woman  – Jane Green

And I’m pretty sure that about 96% of these books I picked out for their pink covers. Yes. I judge books by their covers. The girlier, the better. But it’s okay…my justification is that I spent approximately 50 months of my life slacking off, riding down stairs in laundry baskets, pulling pranks and staying up too late with friends reading text books and business journals throughout college so now I’m allowed to spend 50 months reading nothing but fluff.

  1. What did you think of Second Chance & The Other Woman by Jane Green? The three books I’ve read of hers have been pretty hit or miss: the first was okay (Jemima J), the second I like a lot (Babyville), but the third I didn’t even finish (Straight Talking – the first book I haven’t finished in at least 2 years). So I’m a bit hesitant now to try out some of her other books. Let me know if those 2 are worth checking out!

    • To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled with either of them. I was able to get through them but I wasn’t staying up all night just to finish. I did enjoy “To Have and to Hold” though. I used to really like Jane Green a lot but I think they’re all just a little too similar for me. Do you have any chick lit recommendations?

      • Marian Keyes is always good. I recently read her latest, This Charming Man, and enjoyed it a lot. Or if you want something a little bit outrageous, there’s the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I didn’t really like the first book the series, but the others I’ve read have been very entertaining.

    • Because I thought it sounded funny. Turns out…I’m more than a little appaled by Tucker. I really don’t like his writing style and I’m having a hard time making it through the book.

  4. [...] is going to make me pay $237 to replace the burnt items…even with a copy of the fire report. Love the Nashville library a little less. March 10th: Finally feel settled. Have furniture, clothes, cable (I’ve missed my Lifetime!) [...]

These are the tales of a twenty-something caught somewhere in between adolescence and adulthood. Mostly filled with trivial stories about days in the life... and the humor that can be found in the little things. Read. Enjoy. Relate. Comment.
